Metallic touch

Absolutely love this touch of metallic in menswear by Issey Miyake and really want to use this idea in our shoot. I will find some metallic material and we can make our own tie or bow tie. Think this will work really well and hits the spot with the A/W trends for 14/15

English influences in Chanel 2013

Makeup idea

This first image is very dramatic but I like the white around the eyes. Its subtle but we could play it up and this can make a connection to the 'white witch'

This eye makeup is more striking, pales out her face but it could still work.

Headpiece idea for shoot

Found this headpiece on instagram by Kirrily Johnston.. headpieces becoming a big trend is good as we are going in the right direction in terms of styling. We could even make something like this

Suitcases as props

Taking inspiration from the beginning scene in the movie where the kids get sent away, we all want to use the english look in our fashions as this is becoming popular in real fashion today. Also taking the suitcases from these scenes and perhaps using that as a prop for our shoot. Suitcases relate to the narnia story as well as band life being on the road. I own two old vintage suitcases that we could use and Chantel has a Louis Vuitton one which would bring a stylised look to it.

Thumbnails for street poster

Here are the thumbnails we drew in class for our street poster. We want a portrait composition because that seems to be most common for street posters and gives us the ability to use a full length shot. We feel like a full length shot may be the best way to go in terms of framing because it gives us a whole image of the band and who they are, more room for props and the ability to see the band as a collective. This may change when we shoot but at the moment this is our plan.

Womenswear Trend: embellishments and texture

We could easily embellish our own things if we struggle to find anything like this.. I like the idea of using texture though on our garments so theres something to stand out in the outfits and give a bit of texture to the photos.

The Coatigan

This garment is amazing - would love to find one of these for our shoot

Womenswear trend: 3D piping on jumpers

I love the lighting and mood of this photo of the band Hungry Kids of Hungary. The lighting is harsh and obviously been put through a filter, perhaps the direction we could take for our editorial.

Lighting test photos

Here are the images from our lighting test in the studio:

This first image just has the one light in front of the subjects up high on a 45 degree angle. There are some good soft shadows created which we wanted and the background colour is perfect; not too bright and not too dark.

For this photo we stood back against the wall which dulled the light on the subjects a bit more, but the shadows are a bit more prominent.

For this photo we added a background light to see what it would be like to brighten up the background.  It is very obvious the light is there so we would have to angle it better if we used it and also use a reflector so it isn't so dark on the other side like it is here. But I feel the other photos without the backlight are more successful.

This last photo we pulled the light back a bit. Its similar to the first photo but a bit softer and darker which I think is successful.

So after our test we have decided that we all like the first image and the lighting we achieved there. Here is a drawing of our final lighting plan for the studio shoot:

Lighting test in class

Today in class we decided on the lighting we wanted for our studio shoot which we decided is going to be our street poster. The lighting we want is soft with soft shadows in the background with either white or a soft grey.
We have changed to having 3 members of our band, just to make things easier when it comes to shooting so our members will be 2 boys and a girl.

Here is the initial lighting we thought of, stemming from the butterfly light test we did in a previous class.

And this is the image we used as a guide to what lighting we want:

From this we could see that the lighting has come from above because of the shadowing underneath her nose and around the eyes. So we had to change our lighting plan when we completed the test.

I feel like in a lot of band editorials that they are laid back and relaxed - focussing more on revealing the true personality of a band. I want to have this element in our shoot so it doesn't seem so posed and put together

Band photo inspiration

Absolutely love these photos. The black and white is stunning and they just have a raw and natural feel to them and really captures the vibe of band life.

street posters

Found these two street posters advertising bands - today its actually harder to find photos of bands on the posters its now art and illustration. So these are just initial inspiration we can jump from and the poster we create will be what street posters may look like in the future. The Radiohead also has the tri tone colour palette that we have to work with from our brief

Genre of our band

As we all have different music tastes we decided to mix indie and house music into a genre that is called 'indie house'. I looked it up and its an actual genre but not as popular as other ones.
So our band will make their own alternative music and then mix it into house music. Their aim through their music is to create a sound that will transport you through different emotions - also linking to how the children transported through different worlds through the wardrobe.

Here is a sample of some indie house music

Stumbled across this image which reminded me of the white witch

Christian symbolism in Narnia

There have been many articles and discussions on whether the Chronicles of Narnia is an allegory of Christianity. There are various symbols and references in the movie to christianity and maybe we could look at these symbols and utilise them in our shoot. After researching these are some of the symbols that are evident in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe:

- When Edmund consumes the turkish delight this seems to be a reference to the sin of Adam and Eve when they ate from the Tree of Knowledge. Edmund's gluttony for the turkish delight alludes to Adam and Eve's desire to eat the apple.

The White Witch seems to be an exact representation of Satan—but the imagery that surrounds her does not quite fit that of the devil himself so she could be a servant of Satan.

Aslan the lion represents Christ. Aslan's death to save Edmund's life and his subsequent resurrection are clear references to the life of Christ. He is the creator of Narnia. He symbolizes Jesus Christ and the power of good.

The Stone Table refers to the stone tablets that Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai, according to the Bible.

- Peter represents the apostle Peter. He is a strong leader who becomes the High King of Narnia. most closely would represent the Apostle Peter, who in reality is the first Leader of the Christian church after Christ ascended

- Susan represents Mary, the mother of Christ. She Is the second largest human figure in the story, standing as the courageous queen in Narnia, and though very important is likewise very human.

- Mr Tumnus the faun represents Judas. He first betrays Aslan and wants to kidnap Lucy, until Aslan appears out of the fire and then he repents, however loses his life as a result.

- Lucy's Healing Potion can be a symbol of Christ's blood, which heals our infirmities

- Aslan's Breath seems to symbolise the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit. It is demonstrated on several occasions, he breathes onto frozen characters (Those killed by the witch) and they are restored to life.

When Susan and Lucy walk with Aslan to a quiet place the night of his execution, depicts the Garden of Gethsemane, and similarly after his ressurection he appears first to them in a glorified body.

After his death, when Aslan goes to the witches palace and releases his frozen captives, would represent when in Christs' death "He descended into Hell and set captives free" (however, the meaning of the actual event in scripture is controversial).

Possible direction for shoot

For our editorial we could take the approach that Grace Coddington used in her Alice in Wonderland shoot and take scenes from the Chronicles of Narnia and get the 'band' to mimic scenes and have a real dress up feel to the photoshoot. I think this could be a fun way to incorporate the myth but is it too literal?
